Wrapping up January

Writing
In writing we continued our letter writing unit this week. The students brought in addresses of family and friends that they wanted to write to. We practiced the proper format for writing a letter and then they wrote real letters to be mailed out.  We also learned how to correctly address an envelope!

Reading

The students spent the week researching their Olympic sport and creating posters. Each student chose a sport and will be presenting their information about their sport next Tuesday.
We also looked at some ways that Russia has changed since the past. We looked at how cities are different then and now and also how transportation has changed.
It has been really fun learning about the Olympics, and the students are getting excited for it to start!

Math
In math we worked hard on fractions again! The students practiced splitting groups into fractions, comparing fractions and creating equal fractions.

Spelling
In spelling this week we really hit hard adding endings to words, with our focus on -ing. We learned 3 rules to help us: doubling, dropping, changing y to i. The students spent the week coming up with verbs and changing them into -ing words.

Our final activity was to choose a Superbowl team and write football verbs. It was really fun to see who is going to cheer for the Broncos and who is for the Seahawks!

January 24th

Writing

Our focus this week has been on writing a paragraph. We've practiced doing "stoplight" paragraphs with a main idea sentence, 3 supporting details, and a closing sentence. The kids also made "hamburger" paragraphs that had the outside buns with 3 supporting details inside.

We will use our paragraph writing skills to write letters to family and friends next week. We will really mail these letters out, so if you haven't sent in addresses yet, I'd love to have them!

Reading

In small groups we have worked on characterization. The focus is to discuss how the character acts or feels not just describing what they look like.

For our research the students have chosen a Winter Olympic sport to research. They are going to make a poster for how many people are on a team, what equipment is needed and what the rules are for their sport.

We have also touched on comparing the Olympics and the Paralympics as well comparing the Olympics now and in the past.

Math
We started our unit on fractions this week! We have been discussing how to write fractions, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions. This is an introductory unit so that they can go deeper into the concept of fractions in 3rd grade, but the class is doing a wonderful job with it!
