Reading
This week our focus was on the
parts of a story: characters, setting,
plot (beginning/middle/end). We read lot of different Halloween stories and
discussed their story structure. On Friday the kids read their own book and made
a candy corn summary.
We also discussed possessive nouns and how we know when
and where to add an apostrophe. The kids aren't perfect at it yet, but they did
a great job learning!
Read a story at home and discuss the character, setting and
plot.

Writing
The class wrote scary stories this week. We read Harry and the Terrible Whatzit
and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not
Afraid of Anything. They wrote a scary story and then we went back
through to add in details and spooky sounds.
We also focused on making sure our
stories had a beginning, middle, and
end. The kids created a graphic organizer
to help make sure their stories ended!
Ask your child about their story, or write your own spooky story
at home!

Math
In Math we continued to addition
and subtraction facts and connecting the two. We explored even and odd: if you add two even or two odd numbers the sum is
even, if you add an even and odd the sum is odd.
The class learned a new game, Name that Number. Have your child teach
you!

Science
This week was all about gravity! We explored gravity and how it
works through the air, liquids, and solids. The kids learned that gravity comes
from the center of the Earth and pulls everything towards it.
Ask about our investigation dropping cubes through the air,
water, and on the table. How does that show gravity?

Extra Fun
Wednesday was Iowa's Healthiest State Initiative so our class joined in a walk around Rock Creek. It was a beautiful day!
