Writing

In writing we have started cursive! This is by far one of the more exciting parts of 2nd grade. :)

We take it slow, learning one or two letters a week. The students practice on regular paper first and then in their workbook. They are itching to know ALL of the letters so they can write in all cursive, all the time!  This week we did get to progress past 3 letter words into short sentences.

We have started our unit on biographies. This week we looked at lot of different biographies and took note of what types of information all biographies had in them.
We then worked as a class to research George Washington and wrote his biography together. Next week the students will be choosing their own famous American to research and write a biography about!

Reading
We have been reviewing some of the reading strategies we've learned this year. We've really hit hard main idea/details, making a prediction, and drawing conclusions.

This class LOVES to read so we've been including a lot of SSR time to build our stamina and become better readers.

Social Studies

We have been learning about maps during our Social Studies time. The students read about map keys, grids, and compass rose. The students also made their own map called Barefoot Island. They had to include at least 10 places on their map. This brought back our previous learning that every community needs places to work, live, play, and stay safe.

Math
In math we have been working on our measuring and graphing skills. We did a long project that included measuring parts of our bodies (head, waist, feet, knee to floor, elbow to fingertip, etc) and listing those on papers. The students then took that information and organized it into frequency charts, line plots, and bar graphs

Fun
Finally, some pictures of the fun we've been having lately!
We had our Valentine's party last week. Thank you so much to everyone who helped out, it was a wonderful party and the kids had a great time!

We also earned a PBIS reward for 1 or less office referral at recess. Dr. Dittmar lead the kids in a dance party and we got gum!
